Curate Your Perfect Skincare Routine

If you’re reading this blog post, I can be almost certain that you fall into one of two categories of people

  1. The ones who have either spent a lot of time researching skin care products/ tried many products with miracle promises only to be left deflated (and worse off economically!)

or…

2. The ones who don’t even know what a skincare regime is – you buy your products from the supermarket or pharmacy without much thought, just a very basic clean and if you’re feeling particularly indulgent then a moisturiser.

Which camp do you fall in?!

I must say even as an Aesthetic Doctor who has extensive knowledge of skin care its quite a minefield to navigate the right skincare for myself. (P.S. I fall in category one!)

The problem is – what products should we be using? and what is good for us? I can tell you now that the product your best friend raves about, might not necessarily be the right product for you. I always refer to the concept of bioindividuality with clients – ‘One mans food is another mans poison’. I know we’re not talking food here, but hear me out…

We are unique individual beings and our make up (the genetic type!) is completely different to another. There are many factors that can influence our skin including diet, lifestyle and products used. For the sake of simplicity, I will be sticking to products in this article but I will focus on the other two later down the line.

Some of us have oily skin whilst others are dry, we have varying skin tones, we can get breakouts- some more than others (that can cause pigmentation) and we are different ages. I’m sure you get the idea here, we are all unique and our skin is no exception.

So back to skincare, my point is that when we approach our skincare regime, rather than doing what our friends suggest (or even nowadays what you see plastered all over Instagram through influencers and celebs getting paid ridiculous amounts to promote products that seem like the holy grail) what you need to do is to understand your skin so you’re able to select products you feel are the most appropriate for you. I can certainly help you with that.

My aim is to simplify for you on the best elements of a skincare routine that are necessary for healthy beautiful skin.

The steps I feel are essential to every skincare regime (and my favourite products for each) include

1. Cleanse

To gently and effectively clean the skin by removing impurities and excess oil, while hydrating and soothing to keep skin smooth and soft.

2. Exfoliate

This is to remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface to reveal a smoother and more radiant complexion

5. SPF (AM) –

To reduces the risk of skin cancer, prevents visible signs of premature ageing and also prevent pigmentation + uneven skintone.

You need a powerful broad-spectrum SPF containing a combination of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays.
